Hi everyone. It is a gorgeous day here in Scotland and the weather is so warm and fine that I have taken my laptop to the garden whilst I do an update with my blog. This is hopefully the start of a warm and beautiful summer!
I have been busy working on getting my website live and updated whilst continuing to promote my books, currently published and those that are a work in progress. But I realised as much as enjoy doing updates for my blog and website and trying to entice readers with my books on my socials, I would have nothing to offer if I do not get the words on the page and my two WIPs first drafts finished. I am roughly half way through both novels and have the remaining chapters planned and plotted, so I really just need to sit down and get the writing completed.
I am always distracted and have spent time creating new front covers for these WIPs as I love the creative aspect of building a book too. I love the aesthetics and messing around with different designs and ideas but the reality is, without the words and completed narratives… what is the point in the creative designs until I have something to actually sell!
So I have been hard at the writing over the last two weeks and managed to get 7000 words written last weekend for A Curse of Power and I have merged rough ideas and details to create more flow in my narrative as the plots and twists begin to shape up. I am toying with an idea and I wonder what your thoughts are as readers or book lovers in general?
A Curse of Power is written in 3rd person narrative at the outset and once the portal has done its job and the setting changes, I move to first person narrative to capture the significant change experienced by the main character Mae. I feel this reads well but I wonder if readers would prefer the narrative to be one or the other rather than a mixture of both?
This brings me to my next point. Now that I have moved into 1st person, would readers be put off if an odd chapter in the main part of the book is devoted to 3rd person narrative? I would like to include more perspectives from other characters whilst remaining true to Mae in first person and the inner thoughts and turmoil she experiences and the reader receives first hand. Would this be a big no-no for you as a reader? Or would the variety and the pleasure I get from an ever changing narrative perspective be something that would bother you?
I’d love to know your thoughts and I know there is no right or wrong way to write a book. As you will have seen from other posts, I do love the challenge and mixing things up by offering something different to the typical narrative perspective. Please get in touch and let me know what you think… it will help this indie author finalise how the first draft of the novel is likely to look and read!
Thanks
Becca
